    68 Ford 9in in a 55 F100

I have a 55 F100 that I am puting a 68 9in rear end in. My question is the 68 is 2" longer on both side, Will it still work even if I don't shorten the tubes? I am running leaf spring. Or would I bet better off rebuilding the dana 44 with highway gears?
