Some good advice here... I have done this a number of times and it is much less involved to use the stock rear. You could also pick up a 9 inch from a junk yard to use as the donor. I used a '75 Lincoln rearend and it cost me about 500 bucks for narrowing, cutting the axles, new bearings and shipping and the stock brakes bolt right up.
Another option would be to do some measuring (after you get your rims and tires) to see if you can find a rear end that is close to what you need. Even an S10 would work if it fills the gap correctly. If you have no plans for drag racing the S10 rear will live for a long time under your truck.
The leaf spring suspension is a good choice also, stick with it. Less headaches, low maintenance and excellant traction if you put on a set of CalTracs. You could use the S10 springs also for a smaller, lighter package. Going this route will get you a ton of aftermarket support and an easily lowerable suspension package.
