rearend welding
After reading biglar's posts and the reply. I want to know if there is a proper technique to welding a rearend. I'm getting ready to put a four link in my truck and have never welded to an axle housing. Is there anything I need to watch for besides warpage. Also I'll be putting axle saddles in my F-100 when the time comes. I want it to be right the first time. I already have the angle finder for setting a pinion angle. I thought I was ready however I see there is a lot to screw up.

Lon, I've been so frightened of welding on a housing that always have my buddy do it at his fab shop. I line everything up and tack it together and have him do the finish welding. I guess he heats the housing around on the other side where there was no weld with a torch to equalize the heat all the way around the tube. I've also seen him do some magic with wet rags, but never tried to learn the technique myself.

Thanks I know of a hotrod shop that I make take the housing to. I asked my welding instructor if I could make it a classroom project. I was informed that the welding class is for industrial instruction not building a hotrod. So I'm on my own. Thanks again.
