Rim and wheel sizes are not easy and there is few "roules" and accurate guidelines about it.
I didn't want the very tall tire wall-look caused by the traditional setup with 15 inch rear rims.
But on the other hand, 17 inch and bigger tires are rather expensive.
For me the answer was 16 inch. The drawback here is 16 inch has become rare the last years.
On production cars 15" is still much used and on larger cars 17" is not extreme anymore.
Because of this it's not too much to choose from when it comes to wide tire dimensions.
However, BF Goodrich make a 295/50-16 tire. This is what I'm going to use at the rear.
In the front I will use 195/40-16.
My rims are 16x9" and 16x7,5".
This is a setup I've bought from a BMW. If it wasn't a question of money I would have preferred 6,5 or 7" rims in the front, but 195/40-16 will work on a 7,5" rim, so I let it pass.
BMW has 5-120mm bolt pattern and since I have a Jaguar IRS and and a Mustang II with Chevrolet bolt pattern, the BMW rims will fit right on.
Yes there are a minor difference because of the use of inches on the suspensions and metric system on the rims, but I've spoken to many people about it and thay all say the same: this work just fine. I even know a guy how race drive with this combination with no trouble at all.
Hope this is of some help for you. Just send me an E-mail (english or swedish language are ok!) if you have more questions.
I have thougt 18" wheels on the back because I saw 285/60/18 BFG tires in the Summitracing web page for 160 dollars each.

Before I order the tires I need to find proper wheels to go with them.
To the front I will use 16" or 17" depending on which looks better with the rear tires and what rims are available.
I have thougt BMW rims also that seems to be very cheap in Germany and the 5x120mm bolt circle is ok!.
Anyway I have seen some web pages from Norway where somebody is building a green 34 roadster using quarter panels from L.A.R.S. AB.
Is it yours or do you know the guy?
