independent rear for model A
I have an opportunity to install a independent rar end from a 91 cougar xr-7 into my 1928 model A coupe with a small block ford. What I am wondering is if anyone can see any handling problems at all? The coupe has a dropped axle up front. Anyone know what kind of gear ratios are available for these rear ends?
Thanks so much.

Which rear end is it, the 8", or the 8.8" ?? If it's the 8.8", there are almost as many gear ratios to select from as there is for a 9", if it is the more common 8", you will be a bit more limited. The handling should be fine as long as you size the spring rates to correspond with the car weight. Plan on using coilovers, or the stock Cougar pieces???Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I have been reading the enthusiast magazines for years and can not recall an article about or any reference to using one of thrse late Ford IRS set ups in a rod. There must be a reason. Are you sure this is a practical swap?An Old California Rodder

Did a little web searching. The first link is just interesting. The second and third may be more applicable. In any case, a place to start.

I think that both of the set ups shown above use the original subframe. The Jag conversion eliminated the subframe and it looked trick. The Ford unit is butt ass ugly and I would not run one under a Model A unless the subframe could be eliminated.
Think I would pass.Last edited by Bib_Overalls; 10-12-2004 at 10:17 AM.

Thanks so much for the help. I did not realise that it would be that ugly. I think I will go with the 9".

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
