When I purchased my car the guy wasn't sure what kind of rear end it was. I was wondering if there is a site anywhere or if anyone knows where I can find out what kind of rear end I have by looking for the numbers. It is a GM I know for sure but that's it and it seems to be a 50's rear like a 55 or so.

Ok I looked on there, but don't see any. The one that I think or thought is it doesn't have a picture...
I'm pretty good at eyeing rear ends, do you have any pictures?
The only pics I have of it are in the thread in the lounge called Pics of my 48 or something like that. I don't think you would be able to identify it from the angle and how far it's at but check it out and tell me if you can. If not then let me know and I will get some taken tomarrow or actually thursday and send them to you on Friday.

Yeah I guess so. Happens every damn time. So I guess the one that doesn't come up is it. lol Just messing but yeah I have been searching around the net on like dogpile.com and cant find a damn thing but charts and all.
I was wondering, say the rear end IS a 55 or 57 Chevy rear and has 373's like the guy says. Will it be able to take the abuse of a big block? A guy at my church said that it would be able to. He has a really nice 56 Chevy and uses his stock rear he said and I think a 400 in it he said or a big block one of the two and he said his holds up good. Is this true or not?
If not and I go with a 9" rear then what is a good year and car to look for in a junk yard to get one from? My So Cal Speed Shop Chassis book says don't get one from an explorer because the disk brakes on explorers are HORRIBLE for hot rodders and to try and avoide them as much as possible.
Thanks again for even more info you guy's give me. I wan't to try and make a decision real soon on this because I know I have been tossing millions of ideas around and getting more info from tons of different people.
