Can I attach the neg. ground cable to any suitable place on the engine block or do I have to attach back to where it was removed.
Sounds like a dumb question but I'm new at this and trying to get my 90 Merc Cougar XR7 to start. The old neg ground was all corroded so I have a new cable.
Anywhere there's a metal surface will work. I would also make sure there is a good ground strap from the engine to the frame, because engine and trans. mounts don't conduct electricity too well.Quote:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the original ground cable go from the battery to the frame, then continue on to the block? I never liked that setup. The optimum place for a ground cable is directly to one of the starter mounting bolts. But like Prozzz said make sure you have a good body to frame ground also.
Like Pro 60 said, Neg. cable to the frame and don't forget to ground the engine to the frame as well. If you have electric guages instead of mechanical they will go crazy if you don't ground the engine. And make sure you clean the frame good all electrical connections need to be clean, no rust or paint. :D
