Anybody have a recipe for making floor sweep compound?
As I sweep the concrete floor in my shop, I raise clouds of dust
only to have it settle on EVERYTHING!
I'm trying to avoid having to buy this stuff that looks like nothing more than some treated saw dust.
I can get the saw dust...any idea of what to add to it to help keep the dust down?

Floor Sweeping Compound
6 cups sifted sawdust
1 1/2 cups mineral oil
2 cups rock salt
Mix all ingredients in a 2-quart container. Sprinkle the compound on garage and basement floors, porches, patios, workshops, etc., then sweep it up.

I undersatnd what the mineral oil should do but I wonder why the salt?
I'll give it a try!
The salt may be to absorb the moisture from the sawdust so it doesn't clump....Just a thought.

Well...I mixed up a 35 gallon garbage can of this stuff and it works great! ( and tastes good too!:D )
This is gonna save me a few bucks and a lot of trips to the store.

how do you know that it wont oil dry he was using ? we use oil dry on concrete floors all the time and it looks like saw dust and gets dust all over every thing. it gets dust all over everything because its dirt, but sense you didnt know that, you couldnt understand why i made the point. if it looks like a duck. smell like a duck and act like a duck then there is a good chance it is a duck. when i start cutting and making fun of other people for no reason, but to try to make myself look and sound like a big man then i hope bill do kick me off of the forum and he should.

Come on Guys! CHR is such a cool place to be...there's room for all of us. We all do and say dumb things sometimes (some of us more than others LOL (But there's plenty of room!)...Let's try to be a little bit more tolerant of the differences here. None of us knows where the other person has been or what's happening in their REAL life...let's try to take that into consideration when responding to someone that frustrates or offends us!
You guys are a great group and have a ton of good to offer...but sometimes you remind me of the neighborhood dogs that go around re - peeing on each others territory when it's NOT THEIRS in the FIRST Place!!! ill make a deal with anybody on here and I've told csf this before, you dont cut me , i wont cut you. i wont make fun of your spelling. your typing, your English, your answers, if you don't cut mine, but if you do im gonna tell you i dont like it. i cant spell, and im conscious of it and why people feel like they need to come on this fourm and remind me, just blows my mind. its something ive lived with for 60 yrs. belive me i already know. if its thin skinned to not like it when somebody cut you personaly then im thin skinned. go back and read the post that started all this crap Jerilynne1965 and tell me it was necessary for csf to say what he said and the way he said it and ill apologize to him. hes started every arguement I've see him in. ive jumped the gun a few times and ive apologize for them, or some of them. its something i need to work on and im am, but csf picks a fight, then leave for a while and then his back picking a fight with somebody else. its getting old.
Amen lt1 and Streets. He's not to thrilled with me either. I'm not right all of the time either, but chopping someone just because you don't agree with them just doesn't cut it. Maybe if we just ignore him he will go away.
Back to the original subject of floor sweep compounds. A lot of the dust from a concrete floor comes from the concrete its self. I sealed my shop floor with Dap Water Repellant Sealer that I bought at HomeBoy Depot. It not only sealed the concrete, it made spills easier to clean up. You wll want to clean the floor before sealing it. Use one part Muriatic Acid (swimming pool acid) to Four parts water. Mix it in a bucket, pour it on the floor and spread it around with a pushbroom then rinse with fresh water. Let the floor dry. To apply the sealer, pour it on the floor and spread it around with a soft bristled pushbroom. Rinse the broom with water when yer done so it doesn't become a stiff bristle broom. I bought a five gallon bucket of the sealer, did my 1200 square foot floor twice, two years between coats and I still have two gallons of the stuff left. A little goes a long way. That was ten years ago. There's too much crap on the floor now to move it all out and put another coat on. The last coat is still holding up after ten years. Now the only dust on the floor is from grinding on cars.
Did I miss something here? I guess kitty litter has already been mentioned as a oil relief, dang......now I got to go back & read the whole thread... OH, and don't use the kind that clumps.......lol
OK.......now I see that I was too late & a little off base, I thought you wanted to clean up spills, you wanted to keep the dust down, and it looks like you got a couple of good suggestions as well as a bonus feature....
