Newbie...Few Questions
Hi,
I'm new to this whole custom car scene so please bare with me. I'm currently in the process of buying a cadillac so that I could fix it up. I finally found one online that I like but I have a few questions about it.
1) Can anyone tell me what model this 1960 Cadillac is(62 series??)?
2) From the pictures below what custom work has been done to this car?
3) How much would all the custom work run me?
4) How much should I pay expect to pay for 1960 Caddy fixer-upper?

From what I see it's been lowered and shaved and possibly channeled ( brings body over frame ). Shaving the doorhandles could be done with bondo and a stick welder by tacking a peice of metal on the inside and then leval it on the outside with bondo to match the rest of the contour and the door entry kit ( popper kit ) is easy to install cause of the instructions and that kit costs $125 I belive. Using the bondo method is more of a beginner job but professionally done or correctly is cut out a big hole so that the little door handles holes are gone, cut, fit and shape a peice of metal to fit in the hole and tig or mig weld it in.

It's hard to tell from a picture, especially when it's been dechromed like this one. It's probably a Model 62. The Model 62 had a thin side molding running down the side from the front fender to the end of the quarter panel. The higher end de Villes didn't have that thin molding, but did have a wide rocker molding and some different trim going over the quarters then forward. The 62's were the "entry level" Caddy so would likely be more common, and less expensive.
As Streets says, the cost of customizing is based on how much you want done. The dechroming on this car isn't particularly challenging, but given the amount of doodads taken off there would be lots of holes to fill. The lowering, if done correctly, would run a minimum of $2k depending on suspension condition, and if you wanted an air bag system, double that.
You need to do homework on market value, almost any answer anyone would give you could be correct because no two people will be comparing the same condition car, and there are regional differences based on market demand. The king of the hill for this era Cad is the '59, so they grab big money. Because of that, the '60 has been gaining because it looks very similar but costs less. The better "starting" level cars I've seen, that aren't trashed and could be considered a "driver", have been running around $10k.
The cost of rechroming on these will take your breath away.

1.) The model doesn't matter. All 60 Cadillacs are the same. The only difference between models is the chrome trim and upholstery. The one in the pictures has the chrome trim removed and the holes filled. It probably has new upholstery too.
2.) Besides the dechroming and lowering the only other custom thing I can see is a 60 Buick grille

Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my post. I greatly appreciate all the info. Hopefully you guys could help me out with some more questions.
1) What exactly is the difference between the 1959 and the 1960 exterior wise? Besides the front end, rear bumper and the rocket lights in the back? Are the bodies shaped differently? If so what areas of the car?
2) Anyone know of a website where I could find a lot of pictures of Custom 1959/60 Cadillacs or any Cadillacs for that matter?
