electric water pumps. good, bad, indifferent?

I was looking into installing an electric water pump in the near future to gain additional HP and less drag on the engine so I figured I would get the opinions form the group.

What do you know about these and how well do they work. Do they pump water well and how about set up?

I think they're great. They pump plenty of water to cool your rod, and look good. You don't have to worry about cooling your engine after throwing a belt either. The HP gain isn't much but every pony counts.

They're intended for race applications, not street. They work where intended.

That being said, what problems could arise if I do use it on a street/strip car? Mostly street. I have never heard of anyone having a problem doing so, that is why I ask.

I have only had experience with the older early electric pumps. They worked fine on my bracket racer. But they caused me nothing but problems on the street. Not enuff circulation volume. The one setup used a pair of pumps and when the water outlet temp got up to around 210. The impellers in the pumps would swell, slowing down or stopping the pumps. Needles to say this was a real pain. First trying to diagnose, then trying to correct. The pump system manufacturer was of little help. They discontinued the systems with that style pump.

I went back to different pulley sizes on mechanical pumps..

I have issues with Electric water pumps. Think about it. Electricity+water. The belt-driven water pump that fits your car will usually cool as long as it is in good shape. If not, i would reccomend a replacement from Any good parts maker. Does Edelbrock make one?

As far as horsepower output is concerned, what number's would I be looking at, i.e. 2-3 hp gain? If so, then screw the whole electric pump issue.

How about an aluminum pump for weight reduction, any issues with these as far as quality and longevity?

Re; pp2, get both the housing and the pump from Mopar, save weight and get better flow.
