I'm looking into purchasing an engine stand for when I pull my 440 to tear down and repaint and clean. Does anyone know what weight capacity I should invest in. Will a 1,000 lb. suffice or should I spend the extra for 1,250 lb. capacity?
Thanks

i would spend the extra for the 1,250 capicity, incase you ever decide to go with something huge in the future.
yes that is true, dont cut it on tools!
And usually the 1250# typically have 4 wheels rather than 3 which adds to stability. And you never know, you may some day have a HEMI!!!!!!!
Aw shucks bob, how did you know I always wanted a Hemi. But the reality of it is the chances of that are as likely winning the Lottery. Hey wait, if i win the lottery then I can buy a hemi! I'll do it!:DQuote:

I agree with Bob.I have both and I ended up holding up a 327 by myself when the 3 wheeled one decided to tip over while pushing it......DEFINITELY get a 4 wheeler......:HMMM:
Definitely get the larger one! 440's are heavy, and let me tell you it's very disconcerting to watch the block bounce up and down on a motor stand every time you bump it. You're just waiting to hear that "snap". The guys are right on about the four wheels. I had a small block almost tip over on a 3-wheeler. You really don't want to try and catch it!
There are no 1250 Lb engines, unless you plan on buying a tank engine. Now that being said, get a stand that has 4 wheels. Murray's sells a AC Delco stand with 4 wheels that will work fine. I bought two. Depending on the local Murray's, you can get these for $49.99 or $59.99.
I have a three wheel stand that I used with a 440 and it held up fine, but it could be a little unstable over any expansion strips. I only use this stand now on four cylinder engines.
Get the best u can buy the cheap 1 will break ur motor and leg at same time and the money u save on the cheap stand doesnt pay for either the leg or the motor!!!
u bet i opted for the 1250 and have had absolutely no problems the right too;s sure help complete the job effortlessly ...
