Fuel problems.........

I just bought a '77 Ram with multiple minor problems. First of all it was running really slow. However it went throught the gear fine and in park sounded great. After research was complete I figured it was a vacuum leak. Last Sunday I tried to start it and it would start but it would promptly die after chugging for a second or two. Now it won't start at all.

I replaced 2 vacuum lines, fuel filter, fuel pump, and put some clean ready to go valve covers on it and it still won't start. The guage says it's on E however I made a few trips with a gas tank so I know it now has atleast 3-4 gallons in it.

I tried pouring some gas downt the carburator and it tried to start but after burning the tiny amounts I gave it it would promptly die. This leads me to believe something must be wrong with the fuel system. Does anyone have any ideas? I am not very educated with this. Are there any mechanical pieces that the fuel goes through before the fuel pump and filter that could be messed up?

I would greatly appreciate any help with this!

I tried disconnecting the outgoing fuel line from the fuel pump and cranking it to see if the pump would squirt out any fuel but it didn't. It is a brand new pump and I installed to the letter. Can anyone offer me any advise???:CRY:

Are you getting fuel to the pump? If not you've got a blockage between the tank and the pump. If the inline filter is ok it has to be in the tank.

is the pump even pumping any air? if its not im not to sure but does it run right off the cam? if it does could the cam be flat right there where the pump runs? just an idea

If you run the motor with gas poured in the carb for a few seconds then it stops you either have a bad fuel pump or as others say your have blocked fuel line.

If the gas gauge is not working working, could be every thing is gummed up in the tank and you need to get a new insert piece which has your vent line, fuel line and floater /gas gauge. It could be several things though. Could just be a dry rotted fuel line comming out of the tank,sucking air into the line. Start at the front of the car and work your way back. Check carb filter,in line filters. Pull the fuel line going to the carb and turn the engine over a few times to see if you have fuel pressure . If the fuel pump is electric make sure you have power. If you have fuel pressure It could be that the float in the carb is stuck closed. First try tapping a couple of times on the carbs body around where the float is,if this does'nt work you'll probably end up opening the carb up to check if the float is moving freely and for any trash in the float bowl. I just went through this with my Ranchero. It is no fun.good luck buddy, hope you find the problem.
