back spacing on Wheel Vintique steel rims

I am building a full fendered Model A car. the nine inch has been narrowed to 55 inches. I want to run 8 inch wide rims on the back. Does 3 1/2 inches sound right for the back spacing. I really want the tires to fit under the fenders, not stick out. It's a roadster, could I run 9 inch rims with 4 1/2 inch back spacing?

Or.........................you could do what you should and mock it up so you can measure and not rely on guess work!

Just get out there w/ the tape measure. Put 3 1/2" of measure past the hub/studs and pull out to how wide you want your tire. Then move it in a 1" or 2" and there you have the max amount of tire you need or Want

Question along same line for a highboy with no fenders. How do you determine the cross section width or tire bulge of a mounted tire? trying to get to about 1 or 1 1/4" from body. Thinking of buying 8" or 8 1/2"wide 15" wheels and already have a couple of NOS LR60-15 Goodyears. How do you determine the cross section width?

Thanks for the info. If I converted correctly that's 11.3 Inches or 1.65 inches added to each side of the 8" wheel or 1.4 inches on either side of a 8 1/2 " wheel. Was the tire cross section dimension mounted on a 8 or 8 1/2 inch wide wheel? Of course 1/4 inch is not much to worry about in this case. Thanks again for replying to a newby.
