i used a 68-74 nova rear end under my 40 chevy, but take some measurements & then go here http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/ifs&rearend.htm and look, ya may find something you like even more....joe
Thanks, TooMany
Put the car on jack stands, set the tires and wheels that you are going to use under the car. Measure the distance between the bolting surfaces of the whees, then either go looking for a rear end that width, or order a 9" built to that width.
Used a 74 Nova 3.08 on my 51 Pontiac.
Use the "search" function, been discussed alot on here.
Here's a link to one of 'em:

8.8 Explorer worked great for me in my '36 Chevy.
Ok bringing a dead thread to the top rather than making a new thread as I have a question about the link here,
the page says
Add Width to compensate for drums as follows:
4" - 5" for small cars 5" - 6" for intermediate cars 6" - 8" for large cars
Mine would be this
58" - 59"
'49 Plymouth, '61 Chevrolet Impala
'65 Cadillac, '66 Buick Wildcat
'66-67 Chevrolet Big Car, '72 Charger
'69 Oldsmobile 88, '72 Chrysler
'72-73 Torino
The question is will these fit my car? or do I need to add 5-6" to a rearend that will fit, meaning look for a 52-53" rearend?
Not sure if it matters to some but I dont like carying 2 spares when the wheels ya have fit snug. So another thing to consider is the offset / backspacing you will have in the front. Set yer desired wheels in the back and make allowances for that same offset/backspace in your rearend measurements for a single spare option. Unless of course yer running big / little then, I'm full of it. But we all know I ride a sled w/4 matching 15x7's not a hotrod, not yet anyway!
WHAT! No spare AND no gas jug? Do you make all those perty ladies who like ya cause yer "tall" get out and push or walk to the nearest tire seller? Or do ya yank out the AAA card. I usually wait till after they push a few miles or cant find a tire store open on Sunday, then its 800-AAA  Ah the luxery of the bomb mobiles, gas jug, spare tire, record player, sauna.....
Iffin yer gonna do it, do it with class
