Thread: GM 8.5 rear end 2.73 to 3.43 swap?

Hey everyone can this swap be made on my 8.5 rear end? Does anbody know exactly what I need (kit) or parts ...and how much should labor be if I brought it to a shop. Thanks for you input.

I just would like to swap the gears.

If it's an 8.5 with 2.73's it's a relatively easy swap. If it was 2.56 or lower (numerically) it would require a different carrier (or a spacer). 3.42 is the factory gear in '84-87 Buick Grand Nationals. I'd expect to pay around $200 + parts if done under the car; maybe a little less if the rear is out and can be done on the bench. Find someone with the equipment and knowledge to do it right the first time.

Thanks for the reply...I believe my rear is 2.73 , does anyone know what actually came from the factory in a 1979 10th anniversary trans am. My rear end actually has disc brakes so I know it's the original rear for the car.

My labor guide shows 4.5 hours and we get $75.00 an hour......
