The best kind of muffler for a good throaty roar

OK, I just bought a 72 Sebring Satellite. I love these cars for their almost predatory look. My best friend when I was growing up had a Satellite that he's fixed up nicely with a 350 (or so I think, I'm not positive... maybe 330?). Mine has a big ol' 400 inside of it.

I wanted to reproduce the sound my friend's made: I know they were glasspack mufflers, but they didn't quite have that annoyingly loud glasspack BLAT! sound that sounds like a truck downshifting while engine braking.

His had a pleasing kind of heavy rummble, which would crank up to a nice, meaty, throaty roar with just a SLIGHT edge of glasspack sound when he stepped hard on it.

How and where would I find this kind of muffler?

I put a set of cheery bomb's on my truck and they sound great like the old faltheads use to sound.

Flowmaster ? no thanks.
I like my Dynomax turbos, now my friend just put a pair of the Summit Turbos on his Nova, they sound great.

Describe the sound. It isn't fartlike, right? A heavy rumble with an edge is what I'm looking for. My car has a 400 in it.

Well on my truck (has a 454) I have 50 series Flowmasters, I don't care for that sound, it's not a rumble type of sound that you are probably trying to describe, I know what you mean. Also some radical cams will help you with that rumble. But yeah I wan't to know what kind of exhaust system people are using to get that kind of sound as well. I though about the dynomax one's too but I don't know. Maybe just make your own with a cat and no muffle or neither.

Whoops! Double post. Sorry. FINALLY! A really helpful response. Sounds like there's a couple of different clans here:

The dynamax clan, cherry bomb afficionados and, the flowmaster diehards. Someone mentioned that the flowmasters are "fartcans," which to me sounds like it's kinda like a 16-wheeler downgrading: "Blaaaaat" Am I wrong? I'm looking for a good low rumble that'll pick up to a meaty roar. Will the cherry bomb do this? I went either the Dynomax or Flowmaster sites, and one of them actually had sounds of different cars outfitted with their products on it. Some sounded good, others sounded like some kind of dirt-bike with a nose condition.

Come on, folks. Give me something to work with. It's hard to get one since everyone has a different idea of what that boss sound is, but I don't have a truck, I've got a muscle car (kinda). It's got a whopping big engine, and I want a nice low but powerful rumble. God I wish I could describe it better.

Are the cherrybombs a mellow rumble, or do they pick up to that awful screeching glasspack sound when they get cranked?

Some people don't like Flowmasters, and that is their opinon, Me I like the low rumble I get from my flows, I have Delta Flow 40 series on my '70 Monte Carlo and it sounds very good, You don't get the loud kackle from a 50 series or them old cherry bomb glasspacks that went out with beehive hair dos and going to a sock hop. If you can hear these mufflers on something, take a listen, they may just be what your looking for......Only you know what kind of sound you need for your hot rod! :LOL:

OK, that's better. No loud cackling, farting blasts. I just want a smooth rumble with a sliiiiiiiiiight edge when it gets up into the high rpm's.

Flowmaster may be the way I go.

My niece had a 69 Chevelle 396 SS that had flowmasters on it. It had a nice low rumble that sounded like the sound track from "Vanishing Point". Rent the movie and see if you like it. It didn't blat like my 55 Chevy with cherry bombs. But I kinda liked to make it blat.

Magnaflow makes a few mufflers that sound pretty good, others are kind of blatty.

If you put your exhaust together and it sounds too raspy you can always put in a large diameter glasspack between the catalytic converter and the muffler. That is 100% garunteed to make your exhaust sound DEEP.

Streets see, & I personally dont usually care for the way Harleys sound. Espesially a stock Harley motor with drag pipes, to me it sounds like an old tractor. a healthy harley with compression sound good with the right pipes, not usually drag pipes, but the 2 into1 style. differant strokes for differant folks.
best way I can describe Flowmaster is tincan. Monteman pointed out early that Streets never had flowmasters & shouldnt have a comment or something. Ive had 2 sets, its personal preferance, Ill never have another, its kinda like tring to tell a Bob Segar fan that Def Leppard is better.

Mirror Before I put cherry bombs on my chevy, I had mufflers made buy a company called Stailness Specialties located in Florida that have a real nice sound. There telephone # is 712-589-7750. They probably have the true sound your looking for but they are expensive at around $150.00 each.

I go at it from a different perspective. I look for whatever flows best for performance and if it sounds good ........ that's a nice byproduct.

My buddy has a 67 Pickup w/ a 406 in it! He has a pair of Flowmaster Delta Flow 40s on there. There is no tinny sound to it like the originals..and when he jumps on it ..oh yeah there's an edge alright!

Best muffler on the market and I can't get enough of his truck. I'm putting the exact mufflers on my Impala (454) but 3"

I have experienced the perfect muffler comparison. I have a 46 Ford with a stock 302/Edelbrock manifold and carb. I used Flowtech mufflers on it and love the sound. I have just gotten my 53 F100 on the road with the same engine/induction and the same mufflers. They don't sound the same, not nearly as pleasant as the 46. The only difference is exhaust pipe configuration[ both vehicles have the same stock exhaust manifolds. Exasperating.

Ok the sound will all depend... If you got a little V6 or something the Flowmasters will sound like a fart can, if you got a 454 like mine it will sound pretty good. I don't care for Flowmaster sound though but it is good for now. I know exactly what sound you are looking for and the closest I found was on that hot rod show with the black Nova.... damn I can't remember the name now... Horse Power TV or something with the two guys (one like ford the other likes chevy). Check on their site and they will probably have the Nova project on there and maybe got a clip of the sound and it will tell you the exhaust they used. If the sound you wan't is a good rumble at low idle like nice and loud rumble then you will like what's on this Nova. If anyone knows the show then tell the dude here so he can check it out... I think it's horsepowertv.com.
