Finally figured out my ignition system

Ok, First of all, I need to thank all who gave me ideas and help. I found out that I wasn't turning the ignition switch in the right position to engage the coil, has to be the middle and not the last position, still won't run but, my dad says to put points and a new condensor in and, it should fire up. It does have spark under the dizzy cap if you look at the points contacting just not very well and that spark dosen't make it's way to the plugs. green lights worked off the coil's power 2 after I spliced it back togther, the fuel pump came in today and, that will go in sometime this week, the car should run/drive by the end of this week.:) .

Very cool Matt, I wouldn't expect tremendous spark out of that old 6 volt system. You may have to put on a wire or two here and there. Any bad wire will increase resistance and take away from your power. Sounds like your on the right track, good luck.

I got my points&condensor today for $17.99 at Reds Auto Parts, our local Carquest. The points and the condensor are not conected, if that's what u mean by " Uni-Set ". What Trans fluid do I use? Just somthing that says " For use In Chevrolet Vehicles " or is there special fluid for this old tranny.

Hey Matt regular 90 w gear oil in the tranny, My very first car was a 50 chevy 2 door we called her old Maud cuzz thats what the original owner had named her...

As I remember your original post on this car, it is an automatic. Don't even think about the 90 weight. In the old days there were two type fluids, F and I done forgot the name of the other. But it was the one for GM's and Mopars. I believe any of the new Fluids read on them that they replace that type so they should be okay in the old Powerglide.

Wow..... glad your watching oldford100man, I now also remember him saying it had an old powerglide...kinda rare I guess as the only ones I remember seeing had 3 on the tree....

Don't be suprised when you get her running to find out that it starts off in drive in the drive position and low in the low position. The first Slipandslides (Errr, I mean Powerglides) didn't use low at all in the drive range. Just so you don't think something is wrong when you drive it. :) :) :)

Thanks for the tranny fluid info Streets. We got the points in my car, tried to fire it up and, it fired right up, ran pretty smooth but, we still have to gap the points a little bit more arcuttly.

Hey, its running! cool, good job matt. To bring back an old saying of my own "ITS ALIVE!!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!"

Got to put the fuel pump on still, didn't get 2 it like I thought I would, was out friday night/ all saturday. Yes we do have a Dwell meter.

Got the pump in tonight, got it running again, pump worked fine, we pumped the gas out of a can instead of pumping it out of the tank, just for priming the pump. still needs a little tuning. Tomorrow we'll flush the coolant and add new then, well add oil and trans fluid then, wedsday we'll take it on it's maiden test voyage down the road and back. We also checked the trans whail we had it running, engages very well.

We drove the car today. We filled all the fluids up, fired it up, got it up to temp then, drove it around a little ( down the road and back ). We ran the gas outa the tank too, the guy b4 me had put a fuel filter in so, only clean gas got to the carb. We HAD to have the car down at my grandparents cause, my uncle who is up from Georgia is up at there house until the 21'st and he is going to help me with the rockers and any other body work it needs that we have time for. The car is now at my grandparents waiting for the bodywork to be done saturday or sunday. 90% of the way there it ran like a top, the last 10%, the fuel filter started to get clogged and we did 20 MPH the rest of the way, died a couple of times but we just kept blowing the filter out to get it to the destination. Brakes now work good but, were gonna check the lines to make shure they wont pop. We had her up to 55 MPH then, we ran outa runway and the filter started to clog, we ran
an avrage speed of 40 MPH. My uncle is a nuclear certafied welder, he also does all of his own bodywork with lead and never bondo. I will flush and change all fluids but we really were pinched for time to get it down there.

All the gagues work also.
