Yes the 3rd gear ratio was higher in the zephyr's than in the fords, but it was not any stronger like you state. This conversion was popularized by "top enders" looking not for dragging or street racing but for flat out top end speed.

Furthermore, while it was fine and plenty strong enough to place behind the slower revving motors, like the flathead and nailhead, it would ussually blow apart when put behind the quick revving and higher horsepower chev small blocks.
