How long have we been building engines now, 100 -110 years are so? It amazes me companies cannot get this figured out yet LOL.
Can't say for sure but it probably has something to do with saving weight. Rather than using a "normal" old-fashioned amount of low strength material for the valve, they go with less of a high strength material that has to be heat treated to perfection to work. That kind of stuff works fine in prototype testing and hi-performance applications, but is probably much harder to pull off in large scale manufacturing. And of course, I may be all wet with this theory.
I do remember being told by my local machine shop guy that Ford had issues with the early Eco-Boost sixes. Seems that some of them would blow spark plugs out of the heads. Ford simply didn't put enough threads in the head, according to him. The warranty fix was a steel saver sleeve. He told me that he had repaired a bunch of them. Junk like this is the very reason that I will resist these "new" High Output small engines as long as I can. Too much stress on small parts for long life as a daily driver, IMO.
plugs in the 4.6 and 5.0 are a nightmare . early heads would spit the plug out if not overtightened to 20ftlbs . the 5.0 plugs would break because some thread extended through and got carboned up.
i have a 4.6 due plugs and coils but i will use my little cordless impact to tap a little then put the rb to it and let set for a while.
i'm not a fan of any of the new stuff . disposable cars not to be repaired . and i will walk or ride a horse before i drive an electrical pos .
The article says a supplier sent in a shipment of valves that was found to not meet spec. Unfortunately, those motors were already installed and shipped to the consumer. Up to 4oo motors I think it said... so far 34 to 50 complaints have been received.
