Most gauges receive +12VDC directly (as marked on the gauge "+"), some gauges use a resistor to stabilize voltage and limit current to the gauge. The -12VDC (as marked on the gauge "S") is connected to the sending unit suppling ground to the gauge via resistance.
it should be using a plastic circuit board that the wiring harness is plugged into. I’ve seen the circuit board go bad & the plug to it have broken wires or a bad connection with.
Your wording is very confusing to me. You say "gauge" but then you ask if it grounds "...through the pressure switch"? That sounds to me like an oil pressure indicating light (aka the "Idiot Light"), not a gauge? If it's a gauge you'll have an oil pressure sending unit, not a pressure switch, right?
