Most of these were a setup to do quick gear changes, so you could run out to the track with an "easy" street gear. then at the track open the gear case at the rear and swap to the gear set that meets your needs. A lot of hot rods still use these but more for the cool factor.
Are they dependable I'm a bracket racer ?? 6.5 1/8 mile range 650 hp motor ??

I don't think think you'll break it with 650 HP, but there are many factors that go along with that statement.
We don't know which unit you have and it's previous life .. what, if anything has been done to it? But many circle track racers have used these successfully for decades. It does take up a lot of room, that and the cost makes the Ford 9 inch very popular. Maybe when you get some time you could share a few pictures of the car with us.?.?
We built our Pinto funny car in 1971 with a Franklin Quick Change because of the lower drive shaft----our finished car height was only 47 inches----
Our rear engine dragster 1972 we built with a franklin center and a 3 inch Halibrand live axle shaft with a brake disc only on one side but with both calipers mounted --------after breaking a set of change gears and loosing to Snake when he had got back in the race on somebody elses break---we went to Ford 9 ers with 35 spline axles--------
We sold all the Franklin stuff to some sand racers--------
The QC will handle your hp easily---------you will need to be aware of the change in drive line angles because of the low pinion drive shaft-----

Well when it came down it did do some slight bending to the forward frame rails and broke parts of the rear body mount brackets----I cut some barbed wire fenceing off the pit fence between the pits and the gravel pit along the road ( Irwindale), tied /wrapped the rear body down, reversed the two QC gears to the lower gear ratio ( probably around 3.0 to 1 compared to the 4.11 or so--and then another run----Keeling was so discussed at our progress with this car that he had went to the stands and was sitting with Nick Arias when we did the next run----------and it was the first time that that car made a full pass---------
