Black metallic looking stuff in fuel pump filter & sump

My son called me today and said his truck stopped running about an hour or so after he fueled up. He got the truck towed home & torn down & asked me what would cause this black metallic looking substance in his fuel filter/fuel pump sump in his 2004 Dodge Ram truck. He said it was only in the in-tank pump/filter/sock sump and felt a bit gritty, but the tank looks clean. He fills up his truck every two weeks with gasoline so it shouldn't be old fuel The pump is 3-4yrs old and is a VDO pump. Below is the pictures he sent me.

Over time, contaminants from water and condensation can get rancid and form a sludge looking muck. Odd that it's only in the pump.

shows that the filter and sock worked
By popular opinions-just a grumpy old man key board bully--But really, if you are going to ask for help on an internet site, at least answer questions about what you are asking about-----

that's what I said but he said he can look in the tank from side to side & see's nothing like whats in the filter/etc anywhere else in the tank. We both just wonder what the hell could have caused it..

Just a wild thought came to mind looking at that gunk...could it possibly be valve-grinding paste?
Does he have anybody out there with a grudge against him?

I may very well be miles off the mark, but as I say: just a wild thought...

He has camera's all over his house, so no one would have snuck on to the property to do that with out him knowing, because it goes right to his phone. But I did tell him to buy locking gas caps for his trucks

He may have fueled up as the tanker was making a delivery ( or shortly thereafter) could'a pumped some crap from the station tanks right onto the truck.
