I'm about to do a complete wiring job on a 55 Chevy truck I need as little advice on a harness that pretty simple an easy, electrical is not one of my strong suits. None of this is really but I'm learning some of it the hard way. (Its fun tho) I've put in a 383, air an 700R. Just wandering what you guys use.

I have put in a couple AAW harnesses and they are a great harness with great quality. You can search their site as they have more than this classis update harness in the link below. They provide nice color instructions and the sheets are fairly large too.

I have used, Ron Francis sub harnesses, Painless, Centech, Rebel, American Autowire & 1 or two I can't recall and have had no problems but with American Autowire, I finished the job and turned on the flashers and the dome light blinked in a 57 Chevy, the factory terminated the dome light lead to the flashers! Since its all factory terminated and finished it was a pain in the butt working upside down under the dash fixing the factories mess up.
One note, I only solder joints, some CEO from the wire companies (can't remember which) said no harness is going to say to solder as they would never sell another harness in a interview, but a proper solder joint is all I do and never had a connection problem. I will continue doing it but as far as harnesses only Centech and Francis's let you terminate to the fuse block if I remember correctly out of the few I have used, all in all Centech was the most I have been impressed with but isn't well known. Get good tools, the job will simplify.
A dual - wattage trigger solder gun, a pair of LOBSTER AK 2MA crimpers, and a KLEIN wire stripper.
Don't spend several C notes on wire then try to cheap out on tools.
I use a EZ wire kit, it worked but there my be better ones. X 2 on using good wiring tools, not the ones in the $3 tool bin at Car Quest.
I picked up a hydraulic cable end crimper and that thing sure has been nice! Good point on the tooling Firebird!
I have a hydraulic flare tool which is the cat's meow good tools make the difference.
