    air chiller

     



    well summer came early. already 100+ .i have a bunch of media blasting to do so i decided to make a chiller for my blasting hood. fill with well water , add a bag of ice and we have instant a/c in the hood . water is around 50 degrees out of the well . have 20ft of copper coil in the barrel .

    I understand the concept but, how does the heat exchange in/under the hood?

    chilled air is coming into the hood. my nylon hood has a collar where the air inters . cools the blood so it is much more comfortable. my high dollar nova hood has air coming in up over your head and down. damn thing also weighs about 6 lbs.

    So you are piping the fresh air through the chiller, then into the hood.

    I recently ran into someone that makes a chiller setup which is used by motorcycle cops. The ice water chiller sits in a saddle bag and has a small pump. Quick connect fittings are used to couple the chill water lines to a vest. Neat set up.

    Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

    That a good idea, I always bake in my hood when blasting. Try to get it done in the morning before the direct sun.

    i'm using all my old bubble wrap insulation on it. not a big deal but gets rid of it
    anything beats nothing . having cool air coming into the hood will help on hot days . i've got several cars to do this summer and otherwise would have passed on them until fall .

    That's a slick idea! I've seen similar setups in rat/street rods for in cab cooling. One guy used dry ice in hos because he said it lasted longer. He also said he had an abundant supply of it.

    i've got a lot of blasting to do this summer. without this i would not be able to do it. by 10 am it is miserable in there. just having cool air coming into the hood makes it tolerable . 50 degree well water with ice in it will run cool for several hours.

    That is one job I do not miss! I used to have to do all the sand blasting at the body shop I worked in. I just tried thinking when I got done there would be some cute girls in bikinis next to me on that beach when I removed the hood. It only happened 1 time. That was a pretty hot Jeep owner. She wanted to watch the rust disappear on her quarter panel. That was the only fun time during blasting.

    Hey Shine, with all that copper tubing and careful engineering when your done with the chiller you sure have a heck of a good start on a still!

    SHINE has an air chiller which would absolutely function as a distillery condenser.
