Saginaw Steering Gear Casting/Part numbers

Anybody have a link that breaks down Saginaw PS gear box casting and or part numbers?

I planned on working on the clutch linkage for the 57 today and got sidetracked figuring out the power steering :rolleyes:

Anyway I found a steering gear out in the shed that just might work. The problem is I've got no idea what I pulled it off of. I found the casting number and part number but so far have had no luck finding a site to break them out.

If everything goes well and I can make the box work I only want to do it once (the gear will still have to be installed thru the passenger compartment). That being the case If I can make it work, I'd like to put a rebuilt gear in it.......I just need to know what to order :confused:

Thanks for posting all the info Denny, if I can’t identify the steering gear I have I may have to match it up as best I can using it.

When I started checking the feasibility of using this box yesterday, I just went out to my pile and started looking….I was mostly concerned about size at that time. I picked out a Saginaw 800 I had sitting out in the shed. After determining that it might just fit, I started looking a bit closer at the box.

First big plus is the stock Plymouth pitman arm fits and indexes correctly. (although I might have to tweak it just a bit).

The next thing I checked was the number of turns stop to stop. The manual steering on the Plymouth is 4 ½ stop to stop (and as I recall correctly the PS cars were 4 turns stop to stop). This box is 3 ½ turns stop to stop which should be perfect. I know from first had experience 2 1/2 Turns stop to stop is a bit too quick for these cars.


Finally I checked the pitman arm travel (using the same pitman arm on the original Plymouth box and the Saginaw box) both have 7 inches of travel stop to stop.

Basically if I were to spec out a box for this I don’t think I’ll find anything much closer. Frankly, the box feels tight and if it weren’t such a PIA to change out (or I could remember what I pulled it out of and knew it was a good box), I’d probably just reseal it and take a chance on it.

If I can make it work it will still have to be installed thru the passenger compartment and I really only want to do that job once. If I can identify the unit I’ll probably just pick up a rebuilt unit and if not I may send this one out to be rebuilt I guess.

You would thing with the casting number 7626692 and the stamped (part # ?) number 9BV124 it would be a snap to identify, but so far I've struck out finding a list that breaks the numbers back.

Went thru this on another forum...this is what was found or lack of.. (Any part number that is CAST into the iron housing or CAST into the aluminum side cover, is exactly that -- saginaw in house casting number. It will not help you in any way to find your particular steering gear. Starting around 1969 Saginaw started ink stamping a two letter code on the side cover and/or the aluminum end plug. The two letter code was used at the GM assembly plants to keep different part number gears separate. (It was much easier to glance at a two letter alpha code than a 8 digit part number.) your 1 / 236 is julian date code 71 or 81 of Aug 24....saginaw in house stamp

Unfortunately, the ink stamp numbers were never considered to be a thirty year identification.)

Thanks Rich, that's pretty much what I found in the last couple of days.

I'm still researching what will work (physically fit) and that is going on hold until I figure I have time to tie a a bay and get the old gear out.
