    Chevy engine ID

    I bought a SBC 350 engine for my Mud Truck. But I'm not sure about it, The number stamped on the Passengers side of the Block behind the Alternator is 16S406771 V0923CHC Does anyone know how to Figure out exactly what engine this is. I have looked online for sites Posting engine number but can find or figure out the ID. I was told from the person I bought the engine from that he thought it is a 4 bolt 350 from the 70's or 80's , it does have 202 heads, and a 500 something lift cam ? Elderbrock manifold and Elderbrock 600cfm carburetor.

    Generally, you would start with the casting number off the rear of the block. This is a 6, 7 or 8 digit number that is raised from the surface of the block, cast right into the block material. It is on the driver side, just forward of the back face of the block where the bellhousing bolts on. It's usually gunked up with grease and debris, so that it will take some cleaning with solvent and a toothbrush to be able to read it. Once you have that number, you would fine tune it with the suffix number off the front of the block that you have provided. Once you know what the block is, remove the valve covers from the heads and find the head casting number in between the valves.

    16S406771 is a Partial VIN
    1 = Chevrolet
    6 = year (probably 1976)
    S = Assembly plant (of the car) St Louis. From 1954 to 1981, Chevrolet manufactured 700,000 Corvettes in St Louis
    406771 = Sequence number

    V0923CHC
    V = Flint
    09 = September
    23 = 23rd day
    CHC = as mentioned above covers several cars but only one 1976, i.e., Corvette with manual transmission, 210 horsepower. That’s probably where this engine began it’s life.
