HOT ROD Mag. May '01

in the May '01 issue of HOT ROD there is an article titles "Scared Straight" about a '37 chevy coupe with a turbocharged straight6 owned by Harry Stirnemann from St. Louis, MO. I cannot find his conntact info anywhere, and would like to get in touch with him, by chance does anyone know his e-mail or phone number?

Also, if someone could explain to me how that turbo set up works I would greatly appreciate it, I can't figure it out for the life of me!! (Sorry I have no pics of it, I don't have a scanner) but for those of you who dont have the issue, the aircleaner sits on the carb and the carb sits on the intake as with a normal motor, but the turbo feeds into the intake, How does this work? - Doesn't the turbo have the intake not the carb, and how can the carb function if it opens up to a pressureized area, doesn't the carb have to be in a box that the turbo pumps into? I"M CONFUSED!!

I've never heard of a turbo after the carb.? Anything after the carb. is a supercharger I thought? Is there a supercharger that is driven by a turbo rather than a belt??? I'm trying to visuallize what you are talkin' about. Anything like this? I'm havin' a brian lock. Look out, I'm goona' blow !!!!!!!!:CRY: :CRY: :CRY:

Do you have a good pic. of the set-up, could there be some plumbing your not seein' in the pic. ? Hope somebody comes along and explains this thang'.

no, i have no pics besides the magizine, and i have no scanner.

I did some more research and learned about both "draw-though" systems where the turbo draws in both air and fuel.

And "blow-though" systems where the carb is in a box and the turbo leads to that, - just like the pics of the supercharger you posted.

The car I am refering to looks like neither set up.

There could be some plumbing not shown in the pictures I have, but it appears that the carb is open to the air (because it has an air filter on it) which leads me to beleave that it is "draw though" but then it looks as if the carb is open directly into the eninge like a normal intake with the turbo also blowing into the intake manifold though an added inlet. - This makes no sense, because the compressed air from the turbo would just blow out the carb. and not enter the engine.

I dunno, I'm still confused.

Can you see an opening to the air for the air cleaner? Or could the air cleaner housing be sealed and plumbed to the turbo?

That still wouldn't answer the turbo plumbing to the intake...........

the air cleaner is definately sitting ontop of the carb, and it doesn't look as if the carb is running only to the turbo and not the intake because it is situated directly ontop of the intake where it would normally be.

I have a feeling it is regular draw-though type set up, I think the picture is just deceiving.

And yes, people are probably laughing at this convo, but oh, well, I've been laughed at before! HAHA

The carb is bolted/welded to the turbo inlet, then the turbo outlet is plumbed to the intake manifold............................Now whats got me confused is what the heck is a BRIAN LOCK :LOL:

The way I understood stevet47 the tubo plumbing went directly to the intake??? that's the "hard to understand part".

I guess one could bolt the turbo housing to the intake manifold, I personally don't like the idea of having pressurized air/fuel mixture in that close proximity to exhaust gas/heat :HMMM:
