Power window switches

Hello I'm looking for some help I'm installing 80's style GM power window switches!!! I checked all the wires with my test light and everything checks out but nothing works as far as running the window up and down!!!! but there is a brown wire that I took as a ground wire so when I hook that up and hit the switch I just blow the fuse all the time What am I doing wrong or not seeing???

The normal early GM switch that you purchase at the auto store will give you a power to the up side or power to the down side or nothing in the middle. They will not work with the newer motors like most of the kits and new cars have. You cannot use a 3 position switch like you would purchase at the auto store for power windows. You have to have new type GM reverse polarity switches. There are some made that look just like the old switches. So, are you replacing a switch in an old system or putting in a new system? Switch must be correct.

Scooting, are you sure? I'm pretty sure I used a similar switch before.

If you're blowing fuses, then obviously you're creating a short. If in doubt what terminals are conducting, use a multimeter to test the resistance between the terminals with the button pushed each way. When you get approximately zero resistance, the terminals are connected.

If you just want to test how the motor operates to see if it's like aftermarket kits and see that the motor works, all you should see at the motor is two wires. Applying positive to one wire and negative to the other will make the window go up or down. Reverse the connection to move the window in the opposite direction. That's how my relatively new aftermarket motors work.

I'm thinking the brown wire is not a ground.

Automotive ground is usually black
