What is the best way to identify my automatic transmission on the 289 in the Fairlane? With my limited eye sight and physically ability about the best I can do is to run her up on the ramps and snap some pics. Any ideas or suggestions?

shape of pan and number of bolts
one piece case or does it have bell housing type front piece??
and early 260/289=======5 or 6 bolts to block?????
thanks, Jerry, I'll get under her in a few days and take a look and then post my findings
hard to find a shop that will mess with it but I sure need it serviced and thought it would be nice if I knew what I had LOL
back in those days there were some that had a D1 and D2 detent--------but you can identify from pan shape and bolt pattern--you ll have to search or maybe if you post pic I can tell you what it is------
cool, I'll see what I can come up with
Try this page, you should be able to match up what you have.

And Mello, correct me if I've got it wrong. But my memory says that in 1962, that shouldn't be a 289 but a 260.. unless it's a swap...??..??
If the case is cast iron, it's a Cruise-o-matic. Also an FM, basically the same trans. And yeah, it should be a 260 or a 221.
Thanks for the link, Mike, and "yes" it has been swapped and not the stock 260. Now that I have all this info I need to get her up on the ramps and start comparing.

OK, it quit raining, gorgeous weather and she's up on the ramps. Took some pics and counted the pan bolts that seem to number 13. The pan appears to be square and it sure looks like a bell housing to me. Would Y'all take a look at these pics while I compare them to the ones on Mike's link and see what we can come up with? Sorry that the pics aren't more professional but I did good to get my old bod under there and even hold the camera still.:LOL::LOL:

OK, after looking at Mike's link, I'm coming up with a C-4. Now, could that also be a Cruise-O-Matic or are they two entirely different transmissions?
that looks to be what is called a C5 .. it has the dipstick tube screwed into the pan ..and the bellhousing would separate from the trans like a stick trans . that is the better of the small block trans .. usually comes in trucks and vans with a 351 engine ..
Thanks Hoss, I also rechecked th number of bolts and it appears there are 14 instead of 13.
After looking around for something with 14 bolts, I can only find the AOD that has them. Now, I'm confused again so I'd better go to a braille count on the bolts again.
OK, contorted under there again and counted 14 there is also a part of the contact surface of the pan that isn't exactly square.

One more comment and I'll s'hup. When I go looking for a rebuilt kit, the only ones that have 14 holes in the pan gasket are the Cruise-O-Matics so wouldn't that mean that mine is indeed a Cruise-O-Matic transmission?
Have a great weekend, Y'all,

well I may be wrong .. can you tell if it has a cast iron center section .. it may very well be a cast iron cruise O matic .. not the best trans ford made but functional I guess ..
Don't know if I can tell if it's cast iron or not but I see what I can do. Would a magnet test tell me?
yes a magnet will stick to the center if it is cast iron ..
the magnet would not stick to the tail piece or the bell housing
you have an FMX ...
Of course I know nothing about these but that is exactly what I have thought. I've been googling that tranmission this evening and another thing that fits the pattern is my shifting pattern. It's a two speed that goes PRNDL and the Wiki's indicate that it is a FMX. Not real excited to find that out but now I know what gasket, ?kit? or parts to order so I can get someone to service it for me. Thanks Hoss, Jerry, Mike and everyone that guided me on this one.
have a great weekend,
Em
well now i`m confused again ..does it shift twice ?.. the FMX should be a three speed and would not be stock to your car .. you shifter is for a different trans ..
If I put it in Drive and slowly accelerate it will shift twice so, even tho there's only two positions, is it a three speed? Don't know if it makes any difference but I couldn't get to anything but the bell housing and tail piece to see if the magnet would stick and it would not so it's probably aluminum, right? It is definitely NOT STOCK because of the 289 and the transmission could even be pre-62 for all I know.
i dont think i have helped a bit .. a little google research tells me ford made more weird stuff than i am aware of .. a two speed and a 3 speed ford o matic trans .. sorry ...
No prob, I appreciate any help or suggestions. Someone told me not long ago that during the mid-sixties Ford would change things in mid year and then again when the new models came out. I'm thinking that GM was giving them fits about that time. hahahahahaha
Column shift or floor shift?
Floor but could be after market or homemade for all I know.
Do you have a picture?
What I'm thinking is that a shifter from a 65-66 Mustang would solve your problem
Ken, I'm not having any problems with it other than it has a fluid leak that appears to be coming from the top. The dude that did my exhaust said it was the transmission vent. Hell, I didn't know they had a vent. hahahaha It shifts real nicely and the fluid is bright red but I really want to get the leak fixed so I thought I'd might as well get it serviced as well. This is the only pic I have of the shifter that shows everything.

looks like you got a kinked cooler line that is probably restricting flow------
with some help you can disconnect the cable from the arm on the trans and see how/if the detents in the shifter line up/match the detents of the tranny shifter arm--lots of times these trans changes result with shifters and trans valve bodies not being synced properly
suggestion---route the vent line to a catch bottle----------
thanks Jerry, I'll add those to my list for the service person - - - - also learnt a new woid - - - - ?detents? - - - - never too old to learn I guess

Ken, I took a better pic today.
