Can I remove the caps on the drier briefly while I insert it into the mounting bracket, then immediately reinstall the caps without messing up my system?

Jack,
Yes, removing the caps will open the RD briefly to ambient air, but if you put the caps back on within a few minutes the amount of moisture that you'll introduce is negligible, especially if you plan to pump the system down to the lowest vacuum you can pull and letting it "cook off" any moisture for a few minutes before introducing the refrigerant charge.
Thanks, Roger, I thought so. Now, if Zirgo would just get my bulkhead plate to me, I might be able to get things buttoned up.
BTW, I did find a local guy who does on-site A/C and hydraulic hose replacement and repair. He also has a shop and all the equipment necessary to do my hoses.
It's getting harder these days to find places that stock A/C fittings. Especially metric stuff. An on site guy would be awesome!
If you have access to nitrogen pull the system into vacuum and use that to break vacuum, that will eliminate any moisture in the system.
I'm probably going to take the hoses to him once I get them cut, fit, ends indexed and marked. There's a bit of a premium for on-site service. I bought most of mine from VA also. I did find a few other on-line suppliers with much more variety, but looking locally was a waste of time. The tough part was not being able to find any dimensions on the various fittings. I ended up buying five or six that I didn't need and not buying three or four that I did.
I know this is an old post. For future reference there is a place in Rockwall called AC Parts Warehouse. They have most parts in stock and if they don't have it they can get it next day. I ran all Reduced hose on mine for space saving and it bends easier than normal barrier hose. Here is the info:

I wish I had thought of using reduced hoses - but I didn't. I bought all the Vintage Air fittings and barrier hose from Summit, then took the cut and indexed hoses to Pirtek in Plano, TX. PIRTEK Plano South - Hydraulic hose repair and replacement in Dallas Metro area with a fleet of mobile vans carrying a wide range of hydraulic fittings including metric. I dropped them off, had lunch with my wife, and they were done in a little over an hour. Nice folks.

i bought a hydrocrimp years ago. best money i ever spent. i make all my ac lines and also hyd lines for my farm stuff.
Shine, I've done one A/C install in my entire 70 years. The payout for me ain't good.
i hear ya , equipment seems to wait until it is on my place to blow a hose . got tired of driving to town getting hoses made .
Big difference between a guy running a tractor or two, and some associated equipment that has hydraulics and the occasional builder who might do an AC system once in a blue moon, and then only leap years. I bought my fittings & hose, then took them to NAPA for crimping.
