6 volt to 12 volt conversion for flathead starter

In the past I have run 6 volt starters with 12 volts and had no problems. Doing that right now on my tractor. just changed the battery and added a 12volt 1 wire alt.Charlie

Agreed. 6 volt starters work well on 12 volts (just spin faster) and will last forever unless you crank the engine over for an extended time. I am using a 6 volt starter on my converted tractor as well and have done the same to VW's in the past. No need for a 12 volt starter IMHO.

Yes using a 6 volt starter will work,but what was brought up was the bendix getting slam on the ring gear was causing some failer to the ring gear and bendix! Just thought I would pass on the link!! Pete
