    2002 Chevy Suburban Trany problem.

     



    Well it's a good thing we are saving money on the new key for the Dodge because it looks like we will need it. I was on my way over to a VA appointment and I stopped at this stop sign. then I started to go and about half way thru the intersection and there was thump and it felt like the car popped out of gear. But it was in gear and slipping. It made it to the VA about 2 block up the road and parked. After my Appointment I came out hoping it was just cold. When I put it in reverse to back up the truck would not move at all. So I pushed it back out of the spot, put it in drive and drove it home. It would slip for a second then it felt like something would catch and it would go. Can a blow converter cause this problem??? I was told this is trany a 4L60E.
    This is a 2002 Chevy Suburban 2 wheel drive with the tow package.
    I have to hurry up and get this fixed because I'm going in to get both my knees replaced in a couple weeks and I won't be able to do it then for a while.
    Anyone know what the problem might be???

    I'd be looking for a good, honest independent (no name) transmission shop. If you find a good one they'll find & fix only what needs to be fixed, and not give you the sad story trying to justify putting a rebuilt unit in for big bucks, unless that's what it needs. I found the one that the local dealers all use for their tranny work, and found him to be totally capable and honest.

    Had a 4L60E rebuilt here buy a local guy . Parts and labor $650. all I did was drive it to his place. You should follow Rogers lead. There are guys out there that can do them blind folded.

    I took a Jeep Grand Cherokee to my guy several years back, told him that my daughter was complaining about slow speed shifting and that she was out of town for a week, and to do whatever it needed, up to and including a total rebuild. He called me two hours later, said the Jeep was all done. Said he test drove it, hooked up his pressure gauges to check internals, dropped the pan and changed the fluid & filter - $90 and a clean bill of health. An honest guy.

    Thanks Guys, I used to know a guy out here in Vegas but he was about 50 and that was 30 years ago.
    That guy if the trany was out could take it apart and rebuild it in about 20 minutes, coolest thing I ever seen.
    Of course that was with the old Mopar 727 torque flight trany. Built me the only trany I never broke with my
    Big block 440 Magnum in a 71 Charger. I wish he was still around but I doubt he would still be building tranys
    if he was. I do know a guy down here but I don't know how good he is, works out of a shop in his back yard
    on the side. But he is a trany guy, just met him last year or so. I guess I'll go by and see him. I did price a new
    trany on line with a new converter was $1295 with tax. and then you put your old core in the box and they
    pay the postage back. 100,000 mile guarantee or 5 years.

    Kurt, call a few independent garages, the guys who do general automotive repairs, and ask them who they take their tranny work to. Dollars to dimes the independent garage is going to drop the tranny, tote it over to some good tranny guy, and then stuff it back in place when done, marking up the work all along. That's how I found my guy, and yes, he's getting up in years, but he has a couple of young bucks who've been with him for ten years or more....

    Ya he probably does but he's about a hour and half from where I live or over a 100 miles.
    I have a guy I was thinking about that I talked to down the road from me.
    I met him about a year ago and he works at a trany shop but does them one the side.
    I went down to talk to him today but he was not home so I'll try him again tomorrow.
    I wish they had trany courses out here where I live but they don't, I'd have to drive clear
    in to Vegas. I wouldn't mind doing that on the side my self. Back in the day I was always
    put shift kits and stuff in my buddies trany's, so I am not totally ignorant to working on trany's.

    If the fluid don't smell all burnt-----------you probably had a planetary/sun gear failure----------you can get the parts from transtar(I think that's the name) parts manuals on line pretty well show all the pieces in proper order for assembly---if you have a way to get it uot and back in, you can do it---------just fix the busted parts and don't replace any discs as there is a stack up deminsion---new fluid and filter being sure to get clean fluid into converter and cooler--------


    First tho-------I would suggest you drain it and drop the pan, being careful as there will be some junk directly under where the failed part is--will give you an idea of where to look


    at least the 2 wheel drive can be handled easier than those 4x4-------
