    Mixed pwr steering pump and rack

     



    My 40 ford pu has a Mustang II rack& pin with a GM pump. The pump takes ATF will the rack also use ATF or do I have to use something all together different ? Thanks again for your inputs !

    On my 40 I had a MII rack and a GM pump and I ran ATF 3 in it all the time. Never had any issues from it the whole time.

    You can use ATF. I used Lucas power steering conditioner/fluid.

    ATF is fine. I also use this valve to reduce pressure from the GM pump http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AFC-37130

    Or mount it on an Early Hemi. I hear what you are saying Richard, and the same thought crossed my mind a while back when I started looking at mounting a PS pump on the HEMI going into the 37 Dodge.

    The biggest problem is the length of the stock pump. It just sits out too far especially if you are using a short style water pump and pulley setup.




    I haven't looked to see if there are any different style pumps available (yet), but if I do come up with something I'll post it.

    I have always used GM pump on Mll rack and pinion never any problems using type 3 fluid too

    My question is whats the big advantage of fabing up brackets etc for a M II pump over using a GM pump ?
    A pressure reducer cost $20.00 2 minutes to install.
    I already have a pump and brackets etc. that bolt right on my engine. If all I had was a M II pump I would fab up the pump or any other pump that I could make work and not look like &$@$^$. Thats the great thing about hot rodding we can do all kinds of things to our cars.
