Questions about Saginaw 605 replacement boxes

hey guys, long time since I was here, its time to rebuild the front end of the 41 Chrysler/w 38 Chevy nose.

I bought stuff for a mid 70s Chevy as the original builder didn't remember what he used 30 yrs ago. He said 70 Monte, 70s Nova/Camaro. I looked under a 76 Nova once and it looked pretty close to this.

Maybe someone can tell from the pics what it was.

Anyway I am replacing the leaky steering box too. I searched for mid 70s boxes on Summit and ended up with a Cardone box that seems to replace a Saginaw 700 series.

After taking the fender off it seems to have a 605 on it. It has a 3 bolt mounting pad instead of 4 on the replacement and the front part is longer than the one on the car, not sure it will clear the fender.

Anyone know where to get a correct replacement or another 605

The last 605 I picked up was from Autozone, used 84 El Camino for the application. Rock Auto might be a good source too.

They were used on a lot (but not all) of the 78-87 GM G Bodies. If you source one for a car with the "performance" (F41) suspension it should get you the quick ratio unit.

thanks Mike, I ended up taking the box to Red Hat steering here in seattle to be rebuilt

So, had the box rebuilt the other day, awesome job. And finally found out what the car was made from.

After 2hrs with a NAPA guy we finally matched up the control arms to a 68 or that vintage GTO/Chevelle/Cutlass

One question I have though is.........I ordered a center link and idler arm for a 2nd Gen Camaro.

the car has spindles on it, that the casting number decode as 2nd gen Camaro.

Its lower control arms, and all the steering stuff is painted blue, like it came off the same car.

SO..... either the steering linkage and spindles are off the Camaro.....

or the control arms and linkage are off the same 68ish Chevelle/GTO etc and the Camaro center link and tie rods are the same deminsions on Camaros and Chevelles etc

I figure since there is no funny business going on with the tie rod ends( both ends not screwed all the way in or out on one side or both etc) that they are the same demsnsions or pretty damn close,

Does anyone know if the canter link and idler arm is the same on 68'ish Chevelles and 2nd gen Camaros???

mystery solved, took the center link and looked through MOOGs catalog, its 68 Chevelle
