Never done it myself, but I think it's just a matter of knocking the old one off, then putting the flywheel in the freezer over night, and when you're ready to do it put the outer ring in the oven at about 450F for twenty minutes or so to expand it. Then without too much delay drop the ring over the flywheel, get it aligned quickly and let them reach ambient temperature together. Use oven mitts or good welding gloves.... you only get one shot.
Or, knock the old ring off with a cold chisel and hammer. Set your new ring gear on the flywheel, heat the ring cherry red at 12, 3, 6, & 9 o-clock and tap it on with a hammer, then let it cool.
i think the one i did i actually took the ring off and just turned it over and put it back on as only half a tooth or two was missing ..
Just changed the one on my tractor (same thing) about the only tool you need is a torch. Heat it to remove the old one ..Heat the new one and drop it on. Do a search on You tube or Yahoo. it will show you how.
Thanks guys ,I thought that was the way to do it an Thanks again.
Its a lot EZer off the car then on,but i've done it both ways,I like the oven better then a torch for heating the new ring,I'll lay a pices of plywood on the kichen floor[keeps wife from beating on me] put the flywheel right there so hot ring right out of oven can be layed on,mostly falls on but have a hammer to help.
Or do it out side on the BBQ
Yes put the ring gear in the oven. If you put the flywheel in the freezer and take it out fright before you take the ring gear out of the oven then the ring gear will slip right on the flywheels.
Some ring gear teeth have a beveled edge so the starter bendix will slide in easier and some don't----just be careful of the orientation of things as you do this------
