Weiand Tunnel ram with whicht Distributor....

I have a old 30 Model A project that I need to get on the road soon. In the old box of collected parts for this project there is a Weiand tunnel ram Id love to use. Im having an issue with a distributor that will fit as it cant be any more than 4.5" in diameter. Id really like to run a box-less HEI unit but not finding anything that meets those requirement. :D ... Any Ideas? What are you guys running on your TR's? Cam is Crower and they recommend an ignition upgrade so I assumed HEI, Maybe just go with a standard distributor and put a Protronix Module in it?

A lot of people use the petronix kit and love it, I don`t know I`m using a Mallory unilite, there is also the chip white small base hei seen here...

Really not trying to rain on anyone's parade,thing is no matter who's tune,with a tunnel ram you still going to give up some bottom just for a look.

You didn't tell us much about the spec's of the engine,SCR/DCR,heads,cam matching SCR/,bottom end,carb(s). So I have to assume that isn't up to the tasks at hand.

Without getting into all the spring rates and B.S. numbers. The engine is a 68 327 L79 with a level 4 Crower cam. A couple of the cute little "no go Holley's" on top. Ole school reworked 291 camel back heads all hooked up to a vintage but fresh Bang Bang power glide. Its going to be a point A to point B car not a commuter. I would say Bar hopper but that isn't PC anymore. :D It will run just fine but I need a spark box that will fit.

That White Performance Dizzy might be the answer to another guy's question for one of those nifty old dual quad manifolds that won't work any more :p;) Now to see if I can find that thread.... It will never be a finely tuned aluminum LS7 but Ive owned a few of those as well, and Ive had issues with them as well. Everything has it purpose. Might also take a look at what Speedway offers, they have an HEI distributor that externally looks like a Vertex Magneto!!! No idea how well they work or what the dimensions are, but it sure would have "the look" to go with an old tunnel ram set-up in an A-Bone!!!!!

BTW, welcome back to CHR!!!

I may be way off here but it seems i remember something about a damper mounted trigger system that fires an electronic ignition system.

I saw those and I too like the look but I have to go back to an earlier post... Im really more into function than looks on this car. Its my beater ride and chances are it will be wearing a full hood and patina paint most of the time. Im going through an Anti Shiny stage in my life. I bling out cars all day every day for my customers. Think I'm going through some sort of silent rebellion. I do like the look a lot though. thanks

MSD all the way for what your asking.Call them.Yrs ago in M/P with a tunnel ram it was Mallory.36 total with a lock box MSD or a switch to turn off dizzy for start up on a locked dizzy. All in at 2500 rpm.Braced starter for sure for kick backs.I'd think 500's max for carbs.Don't fall for the 390's trap.Their too small.

Keep on top of the read for the plugs.Carbon-ed plugs are throw aways.

Got my call back from white performance this morning and that distributor is a no go... Just too big. So they do have a Mag fire set up for the hotter cams and 350 hp+. It takes a separate box but what the heck. Ill find some where to mount it where its not too unsightly. Oh and they suggest the MSD 6a or 6al spark CDI box thingy.

buy a mallory YL or unlite it will fit and can be used with a 6a or 6al or the mallory box or the Msd 8551 needs a box or drop in 8360 should fit

If you decide on the mallory unilite, ensure thatit is grounded well to the block or it will blow the trigger eye out of it, 80 bucks gone....

It's always amazing to me how you can ask one simple question and some guys just have to editorialize and tell ya all just how much your wrong and it's a mistake, and on and on and on. I see no reason to close the thread. I, for one, would like to hear what distributor you end up with, what ignition makes it work, and how you make the tunnel ram sing. You asked a very simple question, and as you've said you got a considerable amount of extraneous information along with some good leads. I'd like for the story to continue, and I hope that the thread continues.

Gary said it was his car in the pic he posted? Your telling me that you cant post pics of your cars you had in the 60's and 70's? I mean why? unless there is advertising hold contract on them and the pics are copyrighted by someone else I dont believe there would be a legal way they could prevent it. Most agreements like these are void and need to be renewed after 12 year anyway. Heck a non comp clause can only be held for 5 yrs. If you want to press that I'm sure your attorney could free things up for ya. Im not giving legal advice here but you might want to check into that if you want to use those pics?

I can see how it would look like I was being immature with the camera in the shop and needing an attorney... thanks for bringing that to my attention I will edit that right now. Both my sister and ex are in the legal field so when ever my ex does something for me the attorney approval is needed... She dropped it off at the shop for me...

I dont want to get too far off topic but to answer your gas filler comment :

As I mentioned on my intro thread this thing was my very first car. It burned to the ground a week before or so before I went into the Air Force in 1976. I started working on it when I got out in may of 80. The trend then was bright colors and chopped and smoothed. Well you can see how much has been done since then. Im thinking seriously about reversing some of that stuff and doing the patina paint thing to it, Thinking the door for the fuel is cut in already I might leave that as it feeds the fuel tanks below. Now I build the tanks and use the original gas filler with a tube that runs down through a console to the tanks underneath. I get 20 gallons under the car just fine. Here are a few that Ive done.

Thanks Jerry.I now know there is one guy that understands.Part that hurts the most is contacts are only as good as the spirit apron which it is written.My partner is the closest person to me in the whole world.And I broke that agreement for what?.Woa is me??. Well this new guys burned that bridge for advise from me.Nuff said.
