I figure you spend 250 to 600 for the ring & pinion set. Another 100 for the "rebuild" kit, comes with shims, gaskets, crush sleeve, etc.
The tools, a couple of them are specific and only serve the 1 purpose. A dial indicator can be had for under a hundred and has other uses around a car.

You should be able to get a "take-out" from a wrecking yard for 250..??? to 500 ??? and be done with it! Do some internet searches on how to rebuild a ford 9". It's not a terrible job, but do it wrong and you'll hear it for the rest of your days with that ride!

Or, for less than $1000 you can get one from Just Rear Ends in Reno - Just Rear Ends - Catalog I went with their TruTrac spiral gear locker and it's fantastic!! $1200 plus the freight. I still say if you're going to have someone rebuild the unit you have look for your local off-road guy that's busy. Those guys can set up diff gears blindfolded.

OK. Thanks for all the helpful info. I am going to stay away from the junkyard approach as they are really rough here on trucks and i don't want to buy one that is well, junk, and be back at square one. I was looking into buying the whole thing new like Roger suggested, seems the safest way to go. :)

Roger, am looking at the link you posted, the trac loc posi, what is that? Sorry for all the dumb questions but I truly am a newbie when it comes to rear ends LOL

The Trac Loc Positraction unit is a traditional style positraction carrier which has a stack of clutches that deliver power to the wheel with the best traction, least slip, i.e. limited slip differential. If you're really thinking buying new I suggest you give the guys at Just Rear Ends a call. It's a father/son small shop, and that's all they do so they know their business. As a small shop when you call you're going to talk to one of the owners - not some big box store that's only interested in selling whatever they can. OK. Will go with them when I get the money needed and another vehicle as this is the only one I have right now.
