power steering pump problem

I replaced my power steering pump in my 1965 Biscayne with a fast steer box from a 1982 z-28(purchased from NAPA).

I also installed a new 1965 ps pump which makes a noise like there is air in the system.
I Turned the wheel from side to side about 30-40 times like I always do & the noise is still there.

I drove the car for the first time & the noise is still there & the wheel turns jerky.

What do you think.....bad pump or wrong pump pressure or ?

There very well could still be air in the system, though I'd bet the system pressure is your main problem.

is the belt in good shape and is it tight....ted

I think you've still got air in the system. GM has a special tool, which is really just a rubber plug to fit the PS reservoir cap nozzle, a hose barb, and a small reservoir to catch fluid. Bleeding your power steering - the GM way - AL, United States, AutoPro Workshop Video - Where Professionals Gather for Better Business I've heard of guys using an old cap, drilling it to fit a plastic hose barb, and then using a standard vacuum reservoir to catch fluid to keep it from sucking into the engine.

You can use an A/C vac pump too
