With a little over 7K on a complete new rear assembly , I had a wheel bearing crack . Any body think the wide tires could have Caused it's failure ?

Don't know for sure but I realy don't think that would do it.
Probably not the wide tires did it....but maybe not enough backspace on the wheel. I like the wheel center to be as close as possible to the middle of the wheel shell.
Who did the housing? Any chance it was warped a bit when welded???
All the cracked axle bearings I have see were on badly done housing narrowing jobs--no alignment and sh ttie welding methods----
What you are saying is I probably have a badly done narrowing job . Is there any cost effective way to correct the problem ?Quote:

Do the axles slide in and out of the housing easily, or is one or both binding when taken out or installed?
We were on the way to a car show and when I slowed down for a traffic light I heard a loud growling type noise . did it two more times so we pulled over called a rollback and had it taken to buds house where he has a lift . On the lift we noticed oil /grease on the dr side tire ,looked like seal was leaking . After removing the tire and removing the axle bolts we had to struggle a bit to make the axle come out .Don't know if i would call it a bind it just seemed to be tight then all of a sudden it popped right out .Ran out of time Sat eve and did not work on it today .Maybe I should pull the other one to see how it comes out . Thats sounds bad, with proper alignment etc and cracked bearing it should have fell right out. How about a pic of the axle and bearing?
You have a bent housing. I have run into this before.
Cracked bearing was made in USA . Got a new one put on . When installing axle on truck it slipped right in . Bolted it up ,checked fluid level in pumpkin , drove it home - 5 miles - no noises . Parked it for now as I am in process of getting my rat ready to go thru insp . Will mess with 47 after 39 is on the road Also bud with lift is finishing up a rat truck project and his garage is kinda full right now . Probably will have more questions later . Thanks for the help.
If the new one slid in easy, maybe it was just a bad bearing. It happens. :confused:
I had a 9" in my pro street Dart.........was narrowed and the wheels were 15x15 with 4" backspacing..........drove it for 9 yrs before I sold it and never had a problem.
