    Question AFB don't like turning corners???sbc 350

     



    In a T-bucket,rubber motor mounts and tranny. I've checked volts carefully and nothing is acting up in turn at all.
    Fully cleaned and rebuilt cfm750 AFB on 350 sbc w/th350 tran,has a fair size cam in it,headers,new HEI ,springs are working.,I started to try and fix the bulbber in the turn by lowering the float level from kit spic of 5/16 to 3/8,then down to 7/16,got better each time,but still a little bulbber in it,but not as bad,just bearly there now. I'm not happy going much lower,afrad of it leaning out from low gas level/but only thinking about trying 1/2in. but it scairs me,so asking?
    Is there anything other then float that can screw it up in a turn.
    Also has a hazation when jumping on gas hard even in "N" and driving,checked timing by finding real TDC ect. and set at 3000 with out vac at total of 36*,maynot be related to cornering,but would like to know why it dose that too.??
    AFB is not a carb I ever used before,I used a lot of Holleys over the years.
    Dose same with and w/out vac hooked up

    Is this an old AFB, or an Edelbrock? Either way, probably a bit much carburetor for a mild 350..but the carb is tuneable and you should be able to get the blubber out of the transition. Check the Edelbrock web site, they have an excellent tune-up and diagnostics for the carb. Much easier to see what needs to be done on their chart then try to explain it!!!

    Thanks Dave.
    It's Edelbrock and I see no def in anything but name,but these AFB's are carbs I've messed with before,so was asking. I'll look up the Edelbrock site and try to understand it.
    You know just when ya think your good at tuning 94 and 97's and 4bbl Holleys,along comes this to put me in my place.
    I've run bigger carb CFM on a 312 Y 2x4 off a Cady El and had it work just fine.
    Tryed all 3 setings of excellerpump holes ect.

    After reading there tuning papers,both El and carter,looks like it's too rich by what it said is why hessation. And float level still makes no scents[on my #2 set on neddils and seats too,checked fuel psi with 3 def psi fuel gages[got my buddys 2 as well] and the one in dash,all read 5lb to 5.5 lb.
    I'd put a lower cfm size on if i had it,but used up way too much $ and time on two rebuild kits on this carb,I'm not liking AFB's

    When they are right they are a fine carb, but when they're off they are a major PITA. Remember that every time you adjust the float level you have to readjust the float drop and vice versa.

    T-bucket huh????? how far from level is the carb(from engine tip??)

    Did you buy the calibration kit with the carb? Sounds like the trasition point is a bit fat, could be as easy as changing springs to correct it......

    Motor is mounted dead level,i like them that way,intake manafold top and carb are also level[there is not a slant to top of intake.
    No,I should of,but not having uesd AFB before didn't know better,got lots of holley jets,pumps and stuff ,so didn't think about it like i should of i guess. It's fat for sure,so next I need to fine AFB cal kit. A buddy has a ready to go Q-Jet I may try and see what does as is/manafold was made for Q-Jet and have spacer and gaskets to fit to AFB[This is a case of using what was sitting here at the time on low buck] now finding I 'd been better off getting stuff my son did not have $ for,so trying to make it all work some how

    I like the Edelbrock carbs on a street car, sometimes then can be a real bear to get calibrated correctly, but the stepped metering rods, springs, and main jets when dialed in correctly really work good on the street. Very smooth in the transition circuit and part throttle operation. Takes a bit of reading and some time to get it right but once they're set they stay tuned very well. They don't like a lot of fuel pressure, 4 psi is plenty. Make sure you get a good seal on that QJet manifold to the carb base, doesn't take much of a vacuum leak at all to mess up everything!!!!
