Hey..... I just got a flash back. Seems to me, and I won't swear it was the LTD but there was a Ford from that era that you cut a square hole in the inner fender well (the cutout was marked somehow,maybe punch marks at the corners) and a new plate with screws was used to fill the hole.probably not available anymore but easily made from some sheet stock.
