Picked up Dan's heads yesterday.

The machine shop had my Son's heads ready to pickup yesterday so I went and got them. We are really impressed with the way they came out as we are with the rest of the block work he did.

They installed stainless valves and found some that were bigger than the original C head valves, plus they did the valve guides and installed valve seals that are machine fit to the guides instead of the old umbrella ones that were on there originally.

Now we just have to wait for Dan to decide if he is gong to paint the engine black again, or if it will be Oldsmobile gold for a little change. Then we can start degreeing the cam, putting the heads on, and buttoning it all up for hopefully the last time.

Don said the other night that if this engine isn't right Dan will jump off a bridge. He won't be alone, I am going to be right there beside him. :( I do have a much better feeling about this one though. :)

check for coil bind with those springs

He called me before he ordered the spring kit and asked me what the lift was, so I think he took that into account. The picture may distort the room between the coils, Jerry, at least I hope so. But thanks for mentioning it.

just did some work on a pair of olds heads--guides, seals, cut seat for larger valves, etc

still would not hurt to check . don .looks like the same rigid chimney metal-clad seals i use and many do. seals work very good But it would not hurt to check seal to retainer room running this seal takes up alot of room . i do not want you jumping off a bridge check every thing . it will hurt alot less now then latter

I know how to check for coil room on lift, but how do you check for that seal to retainer room? Good suggestions Jerry and Pat, and I don't swim all that well.:D

you can go to the hardware store find lite test spring. at full lift you should .060 for room seal to retainer at this point is a good time that you can check piston to valve as well

an easy way is to take a small allan wrench that has the short side a little over the valve lift and put in between the spring windings to see if there is extra room between retainer and top of seal




Damm it---if I hadn't misspelled allan(allen) i could of beat Pat---but I did save you a trip to the hardware store

well to can just take the spring off can you should have cam lift 490+ 060 free room =550 so put the retainer back on with locks and retainer to seal should be 550 or better of valve stem retainer to seal hard to check if you do with springs on head cranking as hyd lifters will collapse and you will get a false read

I'd measure with them on a bench(or kitchen table)

At least study the tidal charts so you know when to jump off the bridge

if you check with heads on the engine with valve spring s on heads with rockers and push rods in you can not check this with hyd lifters as lifter will collapse . so away you check this you must understand that the springs on heads now will give a false read for any max lift checking of valve train for any interferences

Too confusing for me, we are just going to trust the guy who did them and go with it. He builds some serious motors, so I trust what he did. Thanks for the input though.:)
