style opinions please.
So i need some opinions from all the style guru`s around here. Im getting the cowl on the model a all straightened up and i started wondering how something would look? Ive looked thru hundreds of my magazine stockpile and on the net and cant seem to find one done this way! (im wondering if there`s a reason)
Im wondering how it would look if i cut off the hood flange that sticks out and hammer it smooth with the firewall and blend it all in? some of the old dodge body`s and the earlier ford t body`s are rounded out like this, and i like the look of those, but cant find a 30-31 done this way.

Im thinking cut it right behind the bead..

Why not?? Smoother is always kewler!!!! Welded to the firewall all the way around it should certainly retain the required strength....

I think that would look really good. To me anytime you can make changes that keep things from catching your eye it is good. You don't want it to look like a bar of soap but just unobtrusive lines make it flow better.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Dave and Ken, if you feel like the extra work it would probably turn out fine. :)
Glad to see you back working on this stuff, John. :) Are you planning on going to Billetproof in April, I'd like to run into you again.

cut it off
piece of cake---just take a thin cut off wheel or saw and cut thru both pieces, weld the seam up as you go

You could replace it with one of these or make one yourself. I find them more attractive than the original. I know of people who have sucessfully used a metal from a wheel barrow to create the inner panel.

Not quite sure what you are trying to do - but this is a Brookville recessed version and a repro of the OEM:

You need some of those pieces 'as-is' if you intend on using a hood and/or a removable cowl cover. Of course, with a bunch of body work later, that can be changed as well. Additionally, with the removable cowl cover, wiring is a heluva lot easier. Myself, I hate working laying on my back to install a rats nest of wires:

Thanks everyone! You`ve made my mind up, im going with it.
Ive been looking at it for a week now but was a little scared to go with it thinking it might ruin the "look" of the finished product. I try and pretend i dont care what people think, and for the most part i dont, but after the grief some of my style ideas on the merc recieved im a little apprehensive about how my ideas will look.
Don, yes i think im gonna hit billetproof this year again. I went last year, but the weather was pretty bad. It will be nice to chat with you, its been awhile.
