I have a 1968 bronco that someone added power steering to. It works good, but the box has a leak and I want to replace it.
I was told it had a GM steering box, but looking at it, I might be seeing a fomoco stamped in it, not sure though.
The thing is it has the pitman arm down tube thing of the opp side as your usual steering gear.
I pulled some numbers off it
(on a tag on the box) CF B1
on body of box W9 05-AR 3580-a
If you can give me any ideas, that would be awesome.

Your steering box should look like the one below........kind of a strange duck. :) There are a bunch of them on Ebay, like this one:

Not trying to spend your money, but if it were me I would bite the bullet and spring for the money to just buy a new or rebuilt proper steering box and be done with it. My logic is that steering is one of the two things you can't take chances with (brakes being the other :eek:) and it is so much easier to just buy the proper part, install it, rather than trying to modify something else to work. Your time is worth money too.

I agree, steering is not something to cheap out on. However, at this time the PO has welded a different bracket system in to mount the box (as well as a different steering column and this and that and ugh, it is a $1000+ job to put it back stock), and I don't have the skills to unmodify it at this point. I have carfully inspected and tested the setup, and it works flawlessly, so I am stuck with it at this point.

I agree that steering is not a place to cheap out, but somone did a very good job installing this system. I have inspected and tested this offroad... extensivly :D and it has done exellent.
I might be wrong about the pitman arm being the opposite way, I have only dinked with steering on old f-series.
Need a bigger picture. :D

The top looks dry. Is it leaking at the pitman arm shaft. If so you may just need to replace the seal.
Check out 1984-97 BroncoII steering boxes.
It has sat since 1986, and had been used for 5 yrs or so prior to that.Quote:

It does look like the one in my '74 Ford. Bear in mind that Ford used two different style boxes in those trucks, if you go wrecker diving be sure to get the right one, they don't directly interchange. Different length columns, for one thing.
It does have a long shaft. However, the bolt pattern is smaller than that on my f350 2wd.
the bronc box has the two upper bolts 3" on center and the lower bolt is I think 5" on center from the upper bolt.
