I've got a ~5 gallon plastic gas tank on the garden tractor, used for mowing spring/summer and has a blade for snow. It has two hairline cracks that I have tried to seal by "welding" the plastic with a small flat iron attacment to a soldering gun - no joy. A new tank is $65 so I'm thinking of an internal sealer. Red Cote says not for plastic or fiberglass. What's a good sealer that doesn't break the bank??
Depending on the type of plastic some can be glued and some can't. For instance MEK will attack polyethylene, but will run off of ABS. For a quick fix I suggest some of Gorilla's black tape made like Duct tape. Last summer the upper radiator hose on my 91 Dakota developed a split of about an inch on the top just past the radiator hose connector. A friend had some of the tape and after wiping the hose off as best I could I wrapped a couple of laps over the split, filled it with water and and drove it some 5 miles home and it didn't leak a drop. It's really good stuff IMHO.
Ken, I found several sealers that excluded plastic, but a kid at NAPA pointed me to a two part epoxy that is specifically designed for plastics called VersaChem Plastic Welder. I mixed up a couple of batches, covered the two areas and let it dry for the prescribed 24 hour full cure time. Put the tank back in this afternoon and so far it is fine, no drips and only $6 instead of $75for a new tank.
