Hey everyone,
One of my projects is a 61 Apache 3/4 ton. I am converting it to a newer drive train. I have pulled the original motor/tranny out and am wondering; Is the original 235 6-cylinder and 4 speed w/ granny low worth anything more than scrap metal?:confused:
Everything and anything, no matter what it is, has value to someone. You may have heard the saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure". I'd be willing to bet that someone, somewhere is crying himself to sleep at night because he can't find a 235 with a granny low 4-speed. Run an ad in Hemmings Motor News or put it on ebay. A free way to find a new owner for it is to run ads on craigslist.com. I might start by asking $175 for it and see what happens. If you do run an ad on craigslist, be sure and include a phone number so people can get in touch quickly. I don't even respond anymore to the ones that have only the email @craigslist. If you don't have enough sense to list your phone number, then I don't need to correspond with you at all. Put it up on craigslist several ways. Engine, engine transmission, motor, Chevy truck motor, Chevy truck motor and transmission, Chevy 235, 235 Chevy and 4-speed, 6 cylinder truck motor, etc., etc. You get the idea. Run the ads in the nearest large metro areas to you, St Louis and Indianapolis.Quote:

Thanks Techinspector1 and Blwn31, I will pursue the Craigslist option. I have quite a scrap metal collection that is going to the recycler next week, I was tossing around the idea of scrapping the motor. I just hate killing something that you just cannot get anymore.

....and I have to disagree with you too, Richard(first time also here and the 'other' site:HMMM:). After several bad experiences I'll no longer put my phone number on Craigslist. I've had good luck with one of my 10 anonymous e-mail addresses and by saying if you are interested, respond and then I'll give you my phone number or will call you back. I've sold everything from car parts, home furnishings and miscellaneous treasures and have had only two items so far go unsold (ya wanna buy a new TACO circ pump or a pair of extended towing mirrors for a '97-'03 F150:whacked::D cheep!!)
Put it over on Stovebolt.com for a price or even free.
Rather them have it then turned into a Toyota bumper.
I have gave away lots of stuff rather then scrap it to my website friends.
Heck I just gave away a Chevy 216 & 194 along w/a Mopar flathead six, all which were good usable motors that I had no need for & no one wanted to buy.....joe
The other drawback to posting your phone # on craigslist (and others) is certain types of folk have scanning programs to pickup phone numbers and then dump them in to robocall databases. We get enough of that already without "begging" for more. One of the VERY few times I'll disagree with my buddy Richard. It's still like classifieds always have been, you've often got to put up with lots of tire kickers before a real buyer comes along. But selling is all about eyes, and CL has lots of them.

If you put a car ad on Craigslist with your phone number, you automatically get the repeated calls with the computer voice telling you that "we can sell your car for more than you are asking for it".......they call every day. I just sold 25 cars and related items on Craigslist and, in my ads, I put "email me with your phone number and I will call you right back" Such worked well, sold everything within 2 weeks.
Put pictures in ad.....people like pictures.

235 w/ a trans is probably worth $500-1000 to someone looking for 1 worth more than the $50-100 ( if that ) you will get at the scrap yard
I have sold stuff on C/List and concur with the above advice - alternate your phone number as alpha-numeric, ie: 7 zero 9 2 four three 6. That stops the robo-call crap, but there is always the chance that an idiot will drive you nuts anyway. Toughest thing for you will be the circumstance that a prospective buyer will have to come to where the engine is - meeting at Safeway won't be an option, so you give up a little security.
Just protect yourself at all times - physically and financially.
