I'm installing a 327 with a 700R4 in the 50 Chevy 2 door coupe.
I need to remove the riveted transmission cross member.
Connected to this cross member are support rails that run forward on an angle back to the frame. The master cylinder and peddles are mounted to the rail on the drivers side which will not be needed and removed. The passenger side rail is just there.
My question is, can they be removed completely and not used?
i cut the center out of mine drop it were it needed to be use some heavy wall tub cross bolted it to the old part of the K member by making up some tabs welding them to the old cross over .so pull two bolts and a small part can drop out with the trans so you do not have to pull out the engine to get at the trans
Competition Engineering in Iowa has lot of stuff for all those old cross members---don't know if they have for those years chevs but should look
What I remember most about the 51 chev that I traded my horse and saddle for was that there was a bolt in the steering arm under the oil pan that was a bitch to get out to get the pan off-
Also the whole front crossmember could be unbolted and a Corvette assy used

I have a friend of mine that was in the military.
I would get his dodge purring like a kitten just before he would come home on leave. Blew the engine every time before he left.
I think it was either a mission for him or he thought I needed more work :D
Those were the days! I didn't mind. My work for him was nothing compared to what he was doing for me and this country.

I need to clarify.
I will be reinstalling a modified trans cross member for the 700R4 connected to the existing main frame.
The rails in question are the small angled ones that run forward from the old cross member.
Has anyone removed these without causing a stress problem on the rest of the frame and body? Thanks.
yep i know how they look :3dSMILE: go head and cut the K menber out if you want you have a low power sbc you will be ok you will just be making a ladder frame out of it i let part of mine in and cut the center out and lowered it like i said the front body mount were part of that cross over and i did not want to play with that so i thined the two braces down welded them ground them smooth then re work the center i have a 400 trans with room .when i just pick my car up jerry it had a 327 in it with that dam bell crank streering .hard to think that chevy used that same front end on the old vettes P.O.S at a dead stop it took a hell of alot of arm strong steering to turn the wheels. yep i unbolted mine and pitch it in the trash . camaro front clip with power and discs brakes made the car fun to drive.some use the s10 front or fat man makes a bolt in kit and others now but when i did mine back in 85 no one was was making kitsQuote:
