39 ford truck windsheild

ok...broke 4 so far...no prob getting them in with tuffpack....frame fully clean and painted...screw holes tapped and the little metal 1/4" joiner pieces are in good shape(and straight)...but the glass keeps cracking at the frame seam(where the two halves join)....mic'd the channel and its fine....any ideas...i'm at wits end and now think if i cut the glass 1/16th or so smaller perhaps it wont crack....pissin me off cause it goes in great..then sits on the bench and within 15 mins, breako....please help

Windshield glass or any saftey glass will break due to 2 things........hitting it with something, or stress on the glass. The stress can be coming from the glass being fit in too tight in the frame. If thats the problem then allowing for some breathing room is what you need. Also putting a good rubber gasket around it will help it from any twisting of the body .

Have you considered just having a glass shop install the new panes in there for you? I've had a few done over the years, the price is extremely cheap if they are flat pieces, and never had any issues.

Don, I agree. I found a guy to cut my front & back glass that moonlights on rods & customs, but he insisted that he glue them in so they were done right. I was amazed at his consistency and craftsmanship, and the two pieces cost me less than $100 for the installation ($220 total cost) done at my shop 25 miles from him, and 15 miles out in the country. There's no way I could have gotten the smooth, professional finish that he did on the mastic - too many tricks after 35 years doing it :LOL:

after the weekends breakage....i'm takin it somewhere before i hooliganize the whole frame....thanks....wasnt really tryin to save a buck, just like doin as much myself as possible and figgr'd its flat....caint be that hard eh
