TPI-Tech Programmable Speedometer
Could use some help. I have a set TPI-Tech gauges, all are working except for the speedometer. I have done the steps 4 & 5 several times, each time after talking with a tech. After I drive the mile and stop and push the button, the readout says calculating and just stays there. It should, according to the tech, say calculating and then within a few seconds, say done.
The Tech says that there may be an issue with the pulsator generator. Can anyone tell me how do I tell if sonething is wrong with it and how do I fix it.
Better and easier would be for someone to tell me that I am doing something wrong in the speedometer calibration process.
Thanks

Sounds like you are not getting a signal to the speedometer, thats what that usually means.
Try re-setting the sensitivity from low to high
double-check the wiring, make sure you have the speedo signal input going to the right wire (tan/white I believe)
make sure the speedometer gear drive is in the tranny, had a customer a while ago tht was missing the drive grar, took a while to figure it out
Any questions, feel free to ask!

I too have a set of TPI Tech gauges and have had several problems with them, however none with the speedometer. After much research I found the gauges are manufactured by the Thomas G Faria Corp. 385 Norwich New London Turnpike P.O. Box 983 Uncassville Ct. 06382 Phone 860-848-9271. I contacted this company and found them to be very helpful and very knowledgable, much more so than TPI tech's service department. Good Luck.

My Son Don also has a set of gauges in his T that included a programable electronic speedo (not sure of the brand) but he spent one day trying to get the speedo to work, and it won't. He went through all the steps outlined, and when it gets to the point where it should read, it doesn't. We are going to have to contact whoever he got them from and try to sort it out.
Sounds like this is a problem for more than just us.

I just spoke to Don, his brand is TPI too. Looks like there might be a trend here. We've suspected that he might not have the worm gear in the C4 to drive the sender, but haven't had the chance to tear into it to see.

I almost got TPI guages but ended up with omega kustom because I like the look a bit better and was worried about hearing similar issues with TPI. I haven't tried to program mine yet so I hope it works ok'35 Ford coupe- LT1/T56, '32 Ford pickup, 70 GTO convertible, 06 GTO

We get most of our components from Faria for our instruments and we have not had any issues, so I'd have to say the core parts are pretty darn good.
99% of the electronic speedo issues are sender related. Bad connectsion, incorrectly wired, missing drive gear. The best way to troubleshoot the speedo sender is to hook up a multi-meter to the sender output, spin the tires and see if you get an on-off signal or a +/- signal pulsing as you turn the wheels. From there its easy to figure out if this the sender or speedo.

In my case I am using the same sender and wires on the Autometer without any problems.

It was probably the sensitivity setting, sometimes you need to change the input from lo to hi, I know their instructions could use some work

The input change was tried and made no difference. It got to a point that it would not go into a calibration mode at all.Last edited by 53 Willys; 10-25-2010 at 01:00 PM.

If you still have the speedo, I'd like to have one of our guys tear into it to find the problem. We have had zero issues with the Faria speedo internals, so if there is a possibility of a problem, I'd like to find out what it is. The funny thing is, Faria is a major supplier to Autometer.

Slightly OT, but related, we just had a problem with two Stewart Warner gauges, but SW stepped up to the plate immediately. Dan bought a set of Wings gauges from Speedway about 2 1/2 years ago, but since the car isn't finished they just sat until a couple weeks ago. When we were installing them we found that the needles had fallen off of the tach and oil pressure gauge.
I called Speedway, who have always been excellent customer service wise, and they told me that SW had a firm 2 year return policy so Speedway couldn't do anything. I called SW in El Paso and got the plant manager, who told me someone would call me right back. They did, and sent us two new gauges at their expense both ways, and all we have to do is put the old ones back in the box and ship them back to them. They apologized and said they were embarrassed that this happened.
Guess whose gauges we will be buying from now on?

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
