New to Hot Rods need some help.

Hi guys,

I just started my first hot-rod project and it seems I am in a little over my head. I thought this would be easy but it is a lot more complex than I thought.

Here is what I am starting with, the motor is a Ford 302 Marine Motor. It was rebuilt last year for a boat and the owner left it sitting outside so it got somewhat rusted. I managed to save the block, i got all of the Pistons, lifters, bearings, camshaft, and Crankshaft out without too much difficulty. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do but not sure how to go about doing it, or if maybe I should take a different kind of approach.

What I Have:
Block and Heads are both Cast Iron.
Block: 302 Bored .030 over Casting Number D2OE-6015-AB 3A4
Heads: I believe to be 351 Heads Numbers on Heads 000E, 10A, 351 WF, 2H4 or 2M4
High Torque Camshaft (From a Friend)

Looking to make a 347 Stroker out of this 302.
Keeping the 302 at .030 over
using the 351 Heads if that is what the truly are
Go with a 3.400 stroke Crankshaft
5.4" Connecting Rods (Not sure if I or H Beam would be better)
.030 Pistons (Looking for 9.6-10.2 Comp Ratio, not sure what style pistons would be best, Flat, Dish, dome, or any variation of those with valve reliefs, Forged or Hypereutectic pistons)
High torque Camshaft,
Hydraulic Lifters,
Carb: Not sure Looking at a 4BBL Double Pump Double Feed, preferabbly Edelbrock,
and Intake Manifold is another thing I am not sure of.
Going with just regular Exhaust manifolds for now.

These are just a start to the questions that I will be having.
The motor is going into a 1996 Ford Mustang.
I want to be able to take this car out onto the street, but also take it to the dragstrip for some weekend fun.

Now that's what I call a project! I'm not the one to give that kind of advice, however I would definitely start out slow and plan to be working on it for a while.

thanks Deuce I will. I know it is going to be a slow project, cause I gotta save up for each part. I am just trying to figure out a few things first, like the differences in cams, cranks, pistons, lifters, valve springs, valves heads, intakes, Trying to learn what is best for what I want to do. and NOT completely drain the bank.

so basically you are looking for advice on building the engine? ... why don't you by a storker kit for the engine... you know it will cost a good bit of money... I have a 306 with 185 afr heads edlbrock upper and lower super charger etc.. now you will need to match the cam to the intake and heads and exhaust ... I would look into a kit if I was you there are alot out there... sounds like it will be a lot of fun... my 92 mustang with the supercharged 306 pushes just over 600 horses at the rear wheels... yes it is fuel injected... a carb set up would be a lot easier but you must also remeber about emission regulations in your area.. I would do a lot of research before going to crazy ... I had a hard time with emissions... and in fact even getting the car to run correct... I had to use a loptop and reprogram the computer to get it tor run right. anyway .. ask away we will help you get were you want to be

do you have an engine in the 96 stang??? is it in good shape???302(5.0).? if you have never worked on a engine i would start small and work my way up. getting to know the engine. if its a gt motor it should be able to get some good hp out of it as is. meanwhile save your money and start doing research and talking to guys that live and breath small block fords. i had a screaming 302 in the 70's and 80's it was a 69 ford galaxie sports roof and i got it running in the 12:00's but i was using old tech.which i know real well but this newer stuff is greeck to me and i have no desire to learn. it's to late in my life,.good luck.and have fun

be careful of marine engines,some run backwards compared to regular car engines. this is not a unusal acourance with marine engines,i have a 292 yblock which is a marine engine it run backwards to the passanger engine.the cams are different and they usually run timing gears and not timing chain.
